About Amy Callahan

My Story

Hi, I’m Amy Callahan and I am passionate about helping people work through communication challenges.

Really this means sales or persuasion with a strong flair of human connection. Sprinkle in some curiosity and critical thinking, and occasional humor.

My formal professional experience is a bit diverse: hospitality, non-profit management, teaching, financial services, and now consulting.

I studied French and economics because I love people and travel but I’m also analytical and fascinated by the kinds of human problems that economics addresses.

These photos give a quick snapshot of who I am as a person.

Working With Me

In general, my process is 4 steps:

1. Dump: This the process of getting all the ideas out of your head and on to paper. This can be done in a variety of ways: hand-written, typed, audio or video recording transcription. We will select a method that works best for you.

2. Organize: The first step is supposed to be messy! After a short pause, we can 'see' your ideas with fresh eyes and start to organize them based on what your goals or discovery are.

3. Analyze: This is when we prioritize, assess ease and challenges, clarify, pare down

4. Make a plan:

I am very curious with a purpose. So I will ask a lot of questions until I feel I have a strong understanding of your project. I have been told, "No one has ever asked that before," on multiple occasions.  Be patient as I work through the process of understanding and strategizing for you. You need to be my partner during this process.  This step often uncovers the golden nugget or critical strategy to make your outcome successful. Also, it is most common that I am not present when my clients present the information we worked on together. Therefore I start the work to prepare you during this step.

My skills are easily transferable between multiple industries because they focus more on people, how we relate to each other, and how we process information cognitively. This is why I have worked with such a variety of industries.

I need time to process in-depth projects, so a 24-hour turn-around is not likely.  However, I work best with structured timelines to pace the work that needs to be done.

I will always let you know if a project is outside the scope of my talents, skills and expertise.  Then I will offer introductions to other professionals I trust who may be able to help you.

Business Woman

Being a business owner gives me tremendous room for my creativity, meaningful problem-solving work, and a purpose for my drive to connect with people. My variety of experiences are blended together now as I help others craft, refine, and practice getting their message out into the world.

Early Adopter of Technology

I joined a group of community members who organized and hosted a public event attended by 300-350 people. My role was to live stream it to expand reach. At this time, live streaming to social platforms was brand new.  My “second camera” was my cell phone and I had it positioned on a 1980’s camcorder tripod. The local news crew didn’t recognize it as such. They moved the easel with the agenda so their big camera could have the shot they wanted. However, they put the easel in front of my camera! It was interesting to see a convergence of technology and shift in control of distribution of information.  I was proud to learn that this event had over 20,000 views.

Cooking for Dinner Parties

I LOVE TO COOK! And I’m pretty darn good at it, if I say so myself.

I host small dinner parties in my home to offer cozy opportunities to have deeper conversations and meet new people.

But I also live stream and share my cooking tips on the socials.

Live Streaming

I think live streaming is a huge gift to society. We can connect with people in ways and locations that used to be impossible. And it allows us to distribute and control our message with much greater affordability and reach.

For a year, I live streamed daily under an alias to test the waters of building an audience from nothing. The platform I used is no longer available as it was acquired and integrated into a larger, well-known app. What I learned was live streaming is just public speaking, consistency is really drip marketing, and being clear on why you’re doing the work is very important to stay on topic and in alignment with your big-picture and short-term goals.

However, it requires us to learn new skills and multi-task during important work. This can be frustrating as it doesn’t always feel as important as the results we are striving for. Practice is the solution.

Star Struck at a Trade Show

For 3 years, I attended a trade show in Los Angeles.  At the last one, Erin Brockovich was a keynote speaker.  I didn’t know what to expect but I was very excited to see her speak.  She was hysterical, so much smarter than Hollywood presented her to be, full of sass, and incredibly passionate about clean water.

The takeaways from her presentation were: let logic and common sense guide you, you need leverage in numbers to make an impact, stay loyal to your cause when it gets tough or lonely, and love-love of each others as human beings is your why.

Here I had a chance to talk with her for a good 10 minutes.

Such a joy!   I’ll never forget this.

Learning Something New

At 48 1/2 years old, I started to take horseback riding lessons in the discipline of saddleseat riding. I was completely unprepared for how demanding this sport is physically, intellectually, and emotionally.  It can be quite defeating when you realize an 8-year-old is riding the same horse you ride during your lessons and the kiddo is making it look super easy!  Horses are amazing teachers.

And yes, this fella really is that big!

Volunteering

I love volunteering when and where I can.  Here I am the Easter Bunny for photos with little kiddos, pets, and I even convinced a few adults to join me for the charity fundraiser.  Other volunteer work includes moving appliances and furniture, donating household items, sewing masks for a men’s homeless shelter, selling raffle tickets at a fundraiser, and taking photos at events.

I am very interested in finding a way to work with elementary aged children to help them build their own educational foundation with hopes that it will impact their future success in life. The pandemic has made this challenging.

Getting Feedback from my Boss

Working from home can be awesome when my days are interrupted by Luna and her energy of pure joy.  She reminds me to get up and move, go outside, and get snacks.  She is also known to get excited for live streaming and wants to join in the fun! As soon as she sees the phone on the tripod or hears me start speaking, she often squeals with delight and starts playing soccer.

More about Amy Callahan

My parents owned a local tavern for about 20 years. I started working for them and learned the power of repeat customers. People come back when they feel welcome, got what they paid for, and it’s easy. In college, I continued to work in restaurants of all types.

I paused my education when I lived in France and Martinique, where my ability to speak French became near-native. I fell in love with learning about different places around the world. The cultures, the FOOD, the music and dance, the language, the fashion, the human systems.

I shared my passion for the francophone world as a teacher for 10 years. My students were adults preparing for travel, college students fulfilling requirements, and small children ages 5-9 years old. My guiding principle for teaching was to make it as real as possible. I knew that I remembered the language better when I had a personal, emotional or sensory connection to the experience. Luckily, I had leeway to design my curriculum to feel real, not strictly academic. Plus this career allowed for my secret desire to be an actress to come out. And with little kiddos, oh it’s so fun to be silly and have fun!

My big heart and compassion led me to the world of volunteer management. I LOVED being involved in my community in a way that provided positive opportunities to help out, share talents, and roll up our sleeves and do hard work. Finding new volunteer jobs was so much fun. Recruiting people to give their time, the most valuable resource on the planet, was challenging. The harder I worked to recruit someone, the less likely they were to work with our program. It was exhausting. The last lesson I learned was creativity is so fun, but sustainability requires money and results.

I made another big shift in my career when some personal changes happened. I planned and prepared with great excitement, made big changes, and two months later, it blew up. I didn’t have a support network for my family needs, and I was new to the area. I fell into insurance and financial services. I learned a ton about an industry that I previously didn’t understand. Econ is not finance!

I learned to value financial planning and safety nets because ‘Plan A’ never works.  The safety nets provide money, which really meant options.  On the flip side, I learned how to network like crazy, identify qualified prospects, how to explain complex products from a technical and emotional perspective, and how to ask for the sale.

Last, but not least, sprinkle in technology! I have consistently introduced ‘new’ technology into every job I’ve held. I had a computer with ‘Windows” not DOS (yes, I’m that old), I made my first website in Publisher, I replaced an overhead projector with a SmartBoard, and more recently embraced live streaming via social media. These tools can dramatically enhance our human experience, expand reach, and are open 24-hours a day!
