Visual

aka digital presentations

Visual communication is tricky because we all ‘see’ things differently. This strategy is helpful to explain complex ideas or concepts quickly with minimal words. This can also help your audience focus on the ideas not processing language then ideas.

Some examples are charts, graphs, flow charts, icons, photographs or digital graphics. Add in some colors. Add in key words only to clarify.

These are used in digital presentations, digital and social marketing, long-form written communication.

Spoken

aka presenter or public speaking skills

Spoken communication is the most complex because it is YOU in living color combining all the layers of human communication.  The goal is to help you determine your message goal, organize and prepare your critical information and how much to provide supportive content, and practice, practice, practice so that you are fluid, at ease, and confident within the time constraints.

In other words:

  • How much time do you have?
  • What do you want your audience to do when your done?
  • What questions have slowed down the process in the past?
  • What are you struggling with now?
  • How are you currently preparing?

Written

aka documents

Written communication has a great purpose of allowing the reader to take their time to process information when and where they choose. So the responsibility to craft the message to minimize processing time and answer potential questions up front is the focus.

Examples are persuasive documents like marketing collateral to sell a product or service, business plans to acquire financing, technical documents are used to clarify operating procedures, training manuals, certification requirements.

These documents must be consistent with and fully support any visual or spoken communication.
